All pieces are original arrangements by Duo Jackson with the exception of the guitar part of Blue Moon which was arranged by Laurendo Almeida. Our rendition of The Lazy Gypsy was also based on an Almeida arrangement. The introduction to “Romance” was composed by Emile Bibobi. Free improvisation features throughout this recording.

alchemycovercd1It has been our intention with this recording to reproduce as faithfully as possible the sound of classic guitar and violin as they would be heard in a concert performance. The recording was made in our living room at Wheatfields during 1996 when we were living in South Canterbury, New Zealand. ( The discerning listener may hear the occasional bird song in the background ).

For recording the guitar we used a single AKG 414 B-ULS and for the violin a Rodes NT2. The instruments have been panned slightly to left and right and are on a single track using a tascam DA 30 Mkll. The Recording was edited by Bob Bickerton and mastered by Richard Hulse. Most tracks were recorded as single complete takes and no effects or EQ have been added at the editing or mastering .

The works on this recording have been composed by Margaret and Miles Jackson between 1991 and 2001. They were recorded at our Escondida studio during the latter part of 2004. We used one pair of AKG 414 B-uls microphones. Editing and mastering were completed by Bob Bickerton.

Tarariki
This work has been inspired by the paintings of Colin McCahon and the beauty of the New Zealand forest. Our aim has been to paint a picture with music which combines elements of the land and our European and Maori heritage. The music speaks of the beauty of nature and the tragic destruction of the forest and birds.

TARARIKI is a magical place of great beauty by the Karangahake gorge between Waihi and Paeroa in the North Island of New Zealand.

VIOLET BLUE
: The colours of music shape our dreams; the rhythms touch our souls.

CLOUD WALTZ: Clouds dance in the summer sky; ethereal spirits fly and sing.

ANDALUCIAN WALTZ: Whitewashed walls, cobble stones, the scent of oleander, imbibe the Spanish sun.

AFRICAN VIOLET: The rhythm hints of a distant land and melody speaks of joy and flowers. Harmonic simplicity invites rhythm and improvisation to cast their spell.

It has been our intention with the recording to reproduce as faithfully as possible, the sound of the instruments as they would be heard in a concert performance. For the recording the guitar we used a pair of AKG414B-uls and for the violin, a pair of Rode NT2 mics.

For percussion we employed a single Rode NT1000. The recording was editied and mastered by Bob Bickerton. Most tracks were recorded as a single complete takes and no effects or equalisation and been added.
